Description

The Environmental Stewardship Directorate (ESD) at Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) seeks highly qualified candidates for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the Chemical Processing Technology Section at the Aiken, SC facility.

The successful candidate for this position will perform research into radiochemical separations, reprocessing of nuclear fuels, and novel actinide and ion-exchange materials. The research thrusts include:

  • Actinide and fission product chemistry associated with the reprocessing of irradiated nuclear fuels
  • Synthesis, characterization and performance of new materials for radiochemical separations
  • Chemical and physical properties of actinide materials

Additional mission areas may include other Department of Energy offices, the International waste management community, and commercial entities with unique waste-disposal problems.  The candidate is expected to support multiple programs/customers and possess strong verbal and written communication skills.  The ability to work with multi-discipline teams to solve these problems will be crucial to the candidates and SRNL's success.

Location: This job will be located at Savannah River National Laboratory, Aiken, SC.

Compensation: Competitive salary with benefits.

Hours: Full-Time

Expected Start Date: The position is full-time and expected to begin in July 2017. The selected candidate will be a temporary employee of ORAU working as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at SRNL. The initial project is one year, with an options to renew for up to two additional 12 month option periods, depending on project needs and the continued availability of funding.

Qualifications

Eligible applicants must:

  • Be a US Citizen,
  • Have earned a Ph.D.  degree in Inorganic Chemistry, Radiochemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or other related degree from an accredited university or college within the last 60 months, and
  • Be capable of obtaining a security clearance.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Work Experience, and Education

The candidate should have experience in determining material properties using techniques such as but not limited to:

  • Infrared
  • UV-Vis
  • Raman
  • NMR spectroscopy
  • Thermal analysis and calorimetry
  • Scanning and transmission electron microscopy
  • Particle size and surface-area techniques
  • Powder or crystal X-ray diffraction
  • Scattering and absorption techniques

Desired Knowledge, Skills, Work Experience, and Education

It is desirable for the applicant to have:

  • Experience in handling radioactive materials
  • Experience with organic/inorganic material synthesis, separations (i.e. solvent extraction or solid state ion exchange)
