Call for sustainability award nominations. Do you know anyone in the Yale community doing outstanding work in sustainability? In celebration of Earth Day, the Office of Sustainability will honor outstanding student, faculty, staff, and group contributions to sustainability at Yale and beyond. Nominations for award recipients can be submitted through our online webform. The deadline to submit nominations is Sunday, March 11, 11:59 PM EST.
Yale to host Climate Change Hackathon
On February 8-9th, Yale will host a “Climate Change Hackathon” event, which will creatively utilize virtual and augmented reality technologies to explore the challenges of global climate change. Sponsors within and outside of Yale will provide materials and participants will compete in teams, in conjunction with technical experts and climate scientists. Alumni start land-based coral farm

Two alumni, Sam Teicher ’12, B.A., ’15 M.E.M. and Gator Halpern ’15 M.E.M., are tackling the impacts of global climate change by starting a land-based coral farm. The business, Coral Vita, is in the Bahamas, a region where nearly 80% of coral has died due to warming waters. The hope is that “accelerated evolution” technologies will help to restore and fortify the coral population. Read more about the coral farm.

Urban Environment and Social Inclusion Index

In December, Data-Driven Yale launched the Urban Environment and Social Inclusion Index (UESI), an innovative tool to track a city's progress towards equity and sustainable practices. The maps draw on socioeconomic and environmental data sets to show results at neighborhood-level within a city. 
Architecture completes first phase of BEEM Lab

The Yale School of Architecture has just launched Phase 1 of the BEEM (Built Environment Ecosystem Measurements) Laboratory. The lab creatively utilizes a combination of physical space and virtual reality as a space for collaborations that work at the intersection of human wellness and built ecology.
